Illustrative system map
A gate is the heaviest thing that moves on most properties, and the one part of an entrance that has to work every single time, in August heat, with a car waiting behind it and a road behind that. Automating one is less about the motor than about the gate itself: what it weighs, how truly it hangs or rolls, the fall of the driveway, and what the system does when something is in its path.

Quick answer
In brief
Gate automation adds a powered operator, safety photocells and remote, keypad, app or intercom release to a sliding or swing gate. Vertex Automation installs new automatic gates and automates existing ones for villas, compounds and commercial premises in Dubai, after assessing the gate's weight, span, hanging and driveway gradient. Operators are specified with a manual release so the gate still opens during a power cut.

How it works
Designed as one joined-up system, not a list of devices.
01
Automating a gate you already have
We install automatic gates and automate existing ones for villas, compounds and commercial premises across Dubai. A great many gates here were fabricated and hung locally in steel, aluminium or wrought iron, and simply never had automation planned into them. Most are good retrofit candidates, provided the gate is sound: square, running true, hinges or rollers in fair condition, ground track clear. Where a leaf has dropped, a post has rusted at the base, or a sliding gate grinds through sand, we'll say so before quoting a motor, because powering a gate that fights itself only brings the fault forward.
02
Sliding or swing, and why the driveway decides
Sliding or swing is the first real decision, and the driveway usually makes it for you. A swing gate needs clear arc on the inside, level ground through that arc, and enough depth that a leaf isn't opening across a parked car or down a slope. A sliding gate needs a clear run alongside the opening for the gate to travel into, roughly the width of the opening again, along a level track line. Narrow plots and short setbacks push towards sliding. Wide entrances with a generous forecourt can take either, and then it comes down to how the gate looks closed and how quickly you want to be off the road.

The approach decides the design: how much room a leaf has to swing, where a vehicle waits while the gate travels, and what the driveway lighting does as you arrive.

03
Safety and access, the parts owners rely on most
Safety and access are the parts owners think about least and rely on most. A powered gate must detect an obstruction and stop or reverse before it becomes an incident, which means photocells across the opening, obstruction sensitivity set properly at the operator, not left at a factory value, and safety edges where the design calls for them. Access should be one decision instead of four: the intercom that answers a visitor can release the gate they are standing at, the credential that opens the front door can open the gate, and nobody needs a drawer of remotes to get into their own property.

A gate is part of the boundary rather than a device on its own. It is specified alongside the intercom and the cameras, on one set of profiles you can change in a minute.

What it gives you
What changes once the gate is automated
Hardware is the means. These are the things you notice once the system is live.
01
Matched to the gate you own
Weight, span, how the gate hangs or rolls and how often it will cycle decide the operator, not the other way round. A gate opening twenty times a day for a family with two cars is a different duty to one that opens twice. We measure and assess before specifying, and we'll tell you if the gate needs attention before a motor goes anywhere near it.
02
It stops when something is in the way
Photocells watch the opening while the operator watches its own effort, so a car in the gap, a bicycle left against a post or a child crossing the drive causes the gate to stop or reverse. Sensitivity is set on site with the gate as it actually moves, then tested in front of you at handover.
03
One credential, gate and door
The gate doesn't need a language of its own. Where the equipment allows it, the code or app action that opens the front door opens the gate, issued and withdrawn from the same place, so changing who has access takes minutes instead of new remotes and a new lock.
04
Usable when the power is not
Every operator we specify retains a manual release, and we show you where it is, how to work it and how to re-engage the drive afterwards. Where an uninterrupted supply matters, battery backup is designed in from the start and sized to a realistic number of openings, not a number on a box.
Scope
What gate automation involves
Set at design stage, from the property and your priorities, never from a fixed package.
- Site assessment of gate weight, span, hanging and driveway gradient
- Automation of existing sliding and swing gates that are mechanically sound
- Sliding gate operators with track, rack and end-stop alignment
- Swing gate operators, arm-mounted or underground, matched to leaf weight
- Photocell beams across the opening and safety edge protection
- Exit detection so leaving the property does not need a button press
- Keypad, remote, app and video intercom release
- Shared credentials with door locks and access control where equipment allows
- Manual release and backup power provision agreed at design stage
- Power and control cabling, commissioning, documentation and handover training
Project detail
The gate is where an arrival begins, so it should not behave like an accessory bolted to a wall. Answered at the video intercom, a visitor can be released at the gate and again at the door from the same screen. Arriving after dark, the gate opening can raise driveway and entrance lighting so nobody parks or unloads in the dark. Leaving, one action confirms the gate has closed behind you as the property sets back and arms. The entrance camera watches the same opening the gate operates, so what the gate did and who was there sit in one record rather than two.
On a new build, gate automation is designed before the driveway is poured: conduit under the crossing, power at the pillar, control cable back to the house, and the operator type agreed with whoever is fabricating the gate so the fixing points exist when it arrives. Retrofitting a finished property is a different exercise, mostly about routes. We look for existing ducts, planted borders and edges we can follow, and where a crossing is unavoidable we agree the method with you before we start, not halfway through. On an existing motor, we assess its type, condition and whether the control board accepts an external release before deciding between adopting it and replacing it.
In Dubai
Gate Automation in Dubai
Climate, regulation and the way this city builds all shape the specification, before any equipment is chosen.
Gate hardware in Dubai lives outdoors in fine dust, long heat and hard glare, and that shows up in specific places: sand in the bottom track of a sliding gate, photocell lenses that stop seeing because nobody has wiped them, grease that thins through summer, and operators cooking in unshaded afternoon sun. It is why we care about mounting position and enclosure rating, and why a powered gate benefits from a routine of cleaning the track, checking beam alignment and re-testing obstruction sensitivity, instead of being left alone until it fails. Wind belongs in the specification too: a solid infill gate catches a shamal like a sail, and that load is better calculated than discovered.
Community rules are the other local reality. Many villa communities and compounds set their own requirements for gates, external fixings and anything that alters the boundary, so we prepare the drawings and technical details management usually asks to see, and plan the work around the access hours the community allows. Power arrangements are worth agreeing early as well: where the supply reaches, whether the operator shares a circuit with anything else, and what you want the gate to do during a brief interruption. None of it is complicated, but all of it is easier to settle on paper than on a driveway with a gate half open.
Where we do this work
Gate Automation projects run across Dubai, and some communities change the method enough that we keep notes on them: Arabian Ranches. The full coverage list is on areas we serve.
Questions
Gates and driveways, the practical questions
Usually, yes, if the gate is mechanically sound. What decides it is weight and span, whether the leaves hang square and move without binding, the condition of hinges or rollers, and whether the ground track is clear and level. A gate a person can move smoothly by hand is a good candidate. One that needs a shove, drags at one corner or grinds through sand needs that put right first, because a motor will only apply the same force again several times a day. We assess it on site and tell you which category yours falls into.
Space decides it more than preference. Swing gates need clear, level arc on the inside, so they suit driveways with depth beyond the opening and nothing parked in the sweep. Sliding gates need a clear run alongside the opening about as wide as the opening itself, so they suit narrow plots, short setbacks and sloping ground where a swing leaf would foul as it travels. Where both are possible, sliding tends to clear a tight street faster and swing tends to suit a more traditional entrance. We measure the plot and show you what each would mean before you choose.
Two things working together. Photocell beams sit across the opening and hold or reverse the gate while anything breaks the beam, and the operator monitors the force it is using, so unexpected resistance stops the movement. Safety edges are added where the design calls for them, typically at closing edges and pinch points. Sensitivity is set on site with the gate as installed, never left at a default, and we demonstrate it with an obstruction at handover so you have seen it work.
It can still be opened by hand. Every operator we specify retains a manual release, and part of handover is showing you where it is, how to use it and how to re-engage the drive afterwards. Powered operation, including app and intercom release, returns on its own when the supply does, with settings and travel limits intact. If losing power is a particular concern, for a property with a single vehicle entrance or an owner who travels often, battery backup can be designed in and sized to a realistic number of openings.
Less than people expect, but not none. The recurring jobs are clearing sand and cleaning the running track, wiping and re-checking photocell lenses, lubricating hinges or rollers, re-testing obstruction sensitivity and confirming the manual release still moves freely. Fixings also loosen over time on a component that cycles thousands of times a year, so they get checked. How often depends on how much the gate is used and how exposed it is, and we set a sensible interval for your gate at handover instead of a generic one.
Start with the driveway
Send us the gate: a photo of it closed, one of the driveway from the road, and rough dimensions is enough to begin. We'll assess it on site, tell you honestly whether to automate what you have, and set out what sliding or swing would involve.
